We are SO lucky to have the most dedicated, hard-working volunteers anyone could wish for! They are here whether it's 100 degrees or 40 degrees, in windy, cold weather or stifling hot days. We have to <i>make </i>them stop for lunch. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This is what remains of our railroad garden. In 2001, it was installed by the nationally-known company, <b>Applied Imagination</b>, which just happens to be headquartered just a few miles down the road from us. They have permanent displays at The Chicago Botanic Gardens, The Belagio, in Las Vegas, and seasonal displays around the country. We have always felt very honored to have one of their original garden railroad displays. Unfortunately, because it is made from natural materials, time has not been nice to it. Several of our volunteers have taken on the task of taking it apart and revamping the area. Some of the original parts will remain (the waterfall and stream) and other parts will change. At this time it is not feasible for us to run the trains, so the tracks, bridges and overpasses have been removed. The tear down/cleanup will be completed this fall and new plants will be installed next spring. It is sad to have to remove this important part of the garden, but exciting to plan and implement new ideas and plants.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We are bundling up for a cold, windy weekend!</span><br />

It tied a record from 1901. So it's REALLY hot and parts of the garden have suffered. The beds with irrigation are flourishing, but those without have suffered . The large containers and some of the vegetable beds are not producing like normal. Everyone (including us) has reported poor tomato performance.<br /><br />The good news is: we've had some really fun, informative programs in the gardens this summer! We had a 3-day Kid's Garden Camp, a 4- session Kid's Garden Club, and a Master Gardener Summer Day Camp.<br /><br />Our <span style="font-style: italic;">Fridays in the Garden</span> volunteers have been real troopers in the heat. They continue to work weekly, regardless of heat index or temperature. They are, truly, the backbone of our gardens!<br /><br />Here are some photos taken of the gardens this morning---after a much-needed rain:<br /></span><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx7JturmXx4vejirFmUAQI33P78mxPm15m9pT9w1PjnO-AcbVuZcsvi9avX_8RU5h3Oilh0-7skQPpv_ekTGuT69MPQvbLsNOiiIIc8C9Irt1P6yDWsg_cLCnSM9M1IjiDxSKFuauYfok5/s1600/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+002.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx7JturmXx4vejirFmUAQI33P78mxPm15m9pT9w1PjnO-AcbVuZcsvi9avX_8RU5h3Oilh0-7skQPpv_ekTGuT69MPQvbLsNOiiIIc8C9Irt1P6yDWsg_cLCnSM9M1IjiDxSKFuauYfok5/s320/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636684844503814482" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The walkway into the gardens from the front parking lot.</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7dKOtJmmaVJ-exAWbcVaBpyF93AmjZSo4qFfrExbdz8VaHVIlT6oMLMTVwiswVNXEdsIt-W2OnXXmHNHfScLmJ4WfSXhdPm6YagJedsZuy-DUlsOEz3iCh2E4oWSdN4kIyB9TQrDF7Zqr/s1600/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+008.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7dKOtJmmaVJ-exAWbcVaBpyF93AmjZSo4qFfrExbdz8VaHVIlT6oMLMTVwiswVNXEdsIt-W2OnXXmHNHfScLmJ4WfSXhdPm6YagJedsZuy-DUlsOEz3iCh2E4oWSdN4kIyB9TQrDF7Zqr/s320/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+008.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636684834659356850" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">The caladium bed</span> ---<span style="font-family: arial;">5 different cultivars!</span><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTe0m3mqyzNiGLb0daXqbn6ECvqKzpvVzl-EBD2NGU2_1yYeiEe0lBT9YRRr819n6y0rBBLdvYcRZeKPNrH1mp691dUagYW0tzLV5OVvjtxeeGe2VsVAMRHs-Ocg2RU7IJ8a9ej-UUX72N/s1600/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+011.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTe0m3mqyzNiGLb0daXqbn6ECvqKzpvVzl-EBD2NGU2_1yYeiEe0lBT9YRRr819n6y0rBBLdvYcRZeKPNrH1mp691dUagYW0tzLV5OVvjtxeeGe2VsVAMRHs-Ocg2RU7IJ8a9ej-UUX72N/s320/Gardens%252C+August+3%252C+2011+011.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636684819087751842" border="0" /></a><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Pennisetum pupureum 'Vertigo'</span> ,<br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Coleus 'Dipt in Wine' ,</span><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Lantana 'Luscious Lemonade'</span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Happy Gardening!</span><br /><br /><br /><span style="font-family:arial;"><br /></span>Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-9710874537853260902011-06-06T06:43:00.000-07:002011-06-06T06:56:31.506-07:00Summer Heat. . . .Already<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" style="font-family: arial;" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvMm0pm8K6LDRkw0OvdK5eDznp3rQtr5o7sB_8r0oolf3Q_VeHd9uJAXuK7jNQ7N6gxSMUNqXHks70yggE1ldyE9FQglSiY4XWoVmHJtMCUBzgjOndKEyPjbDeJ1BsEp_RSbVhW3ms9hB9/s1600/Garden+Volunteers%252C+June%252C+2011+003.jpg"><img style="cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvMm0pm8K6LDRkw0OvdK5eDznp3rQtr5o7sB_8r0oolf3Q_VeHd9uJAXuK7jNQ7N6gxSMUNqXHks70yggE1ldyE9FQglSiY4XWoVmHJtMCUBzgjOndKEyPjbDeJ1BsEp_RSbVhW3ms9hB9/s320/Garden+Volunteers%252C+June%252C+2011+003.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5615102466522290994" border="0" /></a><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-family: arial;">Our volunteers stretching before starting a morning of planting </span>;<span style="font-family: arial;"> led by Kate Vaught, Agent for Family and Consumer Science.</span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-family: arial;">Where did Spring go? We've had a week of temperatures of 90 degrees and above with no end in sight. Another growing season of unusual weather! We are 13 inches above normal in rainfall and now are facing days of hot, humid weather with no forecast of rain in the near future . We turned on our irrigation system late last week as we had newly planted flowers that were suffering from lack of water.<br /><br />We had a "planting blitz" last week! We were very late (because of all the rain!) getting our annual flowers planted, so we ask our wonderful volunteers to come daily to plant the beds. . . .and plant they did! All the display beds are now planted, fertilized, and watered in. Many THANKS to all who came out in the heat and humidity to get the beds done! We couldn't do it without you! Great job! Photos will follow in the next couple weeks to showcase their hard work.</span>Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-53377695047999293752011-05-17T12:10:00.000-07:002011-05-17T12:34:31.144-07:00Beauty---Even in the Rain!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQo0CIdrTbv5b_6Ry20_MpIMcbvbqE8PPF0ylfNOABE8xl0lpOHz4S_-f-MqGnxswLb2mkcWW-bNTUYsvGTLSfyrXVxQC6sAtbSwCD-gtuQuGemZ4CnkpYyCMpVvVUPngThEOqeA3Xe-tA/s1600/gardens--rain%252C+May3%252C+2011+004.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQo0CIdrTbv5b_6Ry20_MpIMcbvbqE8PPF0ylfNOABE8xl0lpOHz4S_-f-MqGnxswLb2mkcWW-bNTUYsvGTLSfyrXVxQC6sAtbSwCD-gtuQuGemZ4CnkpYyCMpVvVUPngThEOqeA3Xe-tA/s320/gardens--rain%252C+May3%252C+2011+004.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607766827225018610" border="0"><span style="font-family: arial; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The shade garden is lovely this year---even in the rain!</span></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhScgtCor8zYsmDHDdxwOfL0Ch5Rm6Z40tdHDUPrFWQRdrFHfKliqWqFZVl-e7OmD0jrxL3431LaSd0m67U9gBc6DstreeChyi0485dqD41pyV1vqpqfekDNJ188mfFKsjdBNfuOtAfpN4P/s1600/gardens--rain%252C+May3%252C+2011+010.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhScgtCor8zYsmDHDdxwOfL0Ch5Rm6Z40tdHDUPrFWQRdrFHfKliqWqFZVl-e7OmD0jrxL3431LaSd0m67U9gBc6DstreeChyi0485dqD41pyV1vqpqfekDNJ188mfFKsjdBNfuOtAfpN4P/s320/gardens--rain%252C+May3%252C+2011+010.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5607766812148709874" border="0"></a><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The Tree Peonies are almost finished blooming, but were, once again, spectacular. This week we made hypertufa planters with 20 people.</span><br /><br /> <span style="font-family: arial;"> We are already thinking about ordering for </span><span style="font-style: italic; font-family: arial;">next</span><span style="font-family: arial;"> year's annual beds and renovating some of the old ones.</span>Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-79801091761843449142010-05-13T11:19:00.000-07:002010-05-13T12:09:52.455-07:00Spring Has Sprung!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnW14-tbrY4VJgO7SUtdxSPoxr7kekXAWK-locb-aD-fSxfkg9Tu3mNlbt8o9Lfluz4pCz5Y4bmpd-tsu97pu6vI6eIhObWzTrm7BP-kSRYDvIKyaNNHFfUQamfUXMdpJvm60wEHcmDkw/s1600/gardens,+May+13,+2010+009.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmnW14-tbrY4VJgO7SUtdxSPoxr7kekXAWK-locb-aD-fSxfkg9Tu3mNlbt8o9Lfluz4pCz5Y4bmpd-tsu97pu6vI6eIhObWzTrm7BP-kSRYDvIKyaNNHFfUQamfUXMdpJvm60wEHcmDkw/s400/gardens,+May+13,+2010+009.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5470825346975884018" border="0" /><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);"><span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">The</span> </span></a><span style="text-decoration: underline;">g</span>azebo area by the lake is looking beautiful. Yesterday I finished the last class until fall, so we can concentrate on planting and maintaining the gardens.<br /><br />We have had very temperamental weather recently, which has made it difficult to schedule planting. Three weekends of heavy rain (totaling about 8 inches of rain), frost on May 9 and 10 and high daytime temperatures ranging from 53 to 84 degrees---often within the same week has made for an interesting planting season.<br /><br />We are having a <span style="font-style: italic;">Kid's Garden Camp</span> during the last week of June . We love to get young children involved in gardening so it will become a lifelong passion for them as it is for many of us. Children are so open to experimenting and trying new things while in the garden. It should be a fun, educational week!<br /><br />We welcome you to come visit the gardens when you are in the area. They change almost daily, so it's a good place to put on your "must stop" list!<br /><br />Happy gardening!<br /><br />!Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-2950734522441851722010-04-08T13:04:00.000-07:002010-04-08T13:32:23.276-07:00Spring is When You Feel Like Whistling. . .<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcDxPwvQFlRE_lIR4MONQEC9uTwSKpEIMt7N1vP80_oP14IcevCyTZpkIkftCJl-j43oZhcf-VTTg93ZnMzxL8Sb5VUdcGpQqjaEXrTKJ671Ci4KEqSYpf9STb4begF4HF0NOL7sez_Tg_/s1600/Spring,+gardens,+April+5,2010+007.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhcDxPwvQFlRE_lIR4MONQEC9uTwSKpEIMt7N1vP80_oP14IcevCyTZpkIkftCJl-j43oZhcf-VTTg93ZnMzxL8Sb5VUdcGpQqjaEXrTKJ671Ci4KEqSYpf9STb4begF4HF0NOL7sez_Tg_/s400/Spring,+gardens,+April+5,2010+007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457859486813213026" border="0" /></a><span style="font-style: italic;">"April hath put a spirit of youth in everything" William Shakespeare</span><br /><br /><div style="text-align: left;">The gardens are changing every day -- sometimes it seems they are changing every <span style="font-style: italic;">hour</span> ! We have had unusually hot ( almost record breaking) temperatures -- mid- to high- 80s -- for early April. This can be a good thing---lots of time to get garden cleanup started, quick seed starting, and beautiful spring blooms. BUT, it can also be a negative---we will definitely still have some below 32 degree nights/mornings, which can damage all the blooms and new growth showing on everything, weeds are already actively growing so pre-emergent treatment may be too late, and it makes everyone want to plant warm season flowers and vegetables. It's still weeks away from being safe to plant summer annuals ---petunias, geraniums, tomatoes, peppers, etc. Our last frost date range is May 10 -- 15.<br /></div></div><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4k6dEzpG1aPMA3uxqKGtDaD9AzNMXQWShgw8Z0GmSvZeVL_iLouRweQw0IIYW9DlMivMFy0FrlndtrMNOmAckJ0ENekpclfHGxblxe-HxEFXwploNPEe8fKKNmeQuyfYlN2vmvGuuUMg7/s1600/Spring,+gardens,+April+5,2010+002.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4k6dEzpG1aPMA3uxqKGtDaD9AzNMXQWShgw8Z0GmSvZeVL_iLouRweQw0IIYW9DlMivMFy0FrlndtrMNOmAckJ0ENekpclfHGxblxe-HxEFXwploNPEe8fKKNmeQuyfYlN2vmvGuuUMg7/s400/Spring,+gardens,+April+5,2010+002.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5457859451270014466" border="0" /></a>Our first <span style="font-style: italic;">Fridays in the Garden</span> is tomorrow and there is plenty of work to be done! As always, there is much work to be done!<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfMLYjjdopRNZcUKuZe9-7yIgTceQs7d5CQkvSmOz7WILeNJnrDoO6D9g9pe1iH9zdfiZlGdl121Uxw1i0c21xkJ6CML8iIX_ck-NGYGBWaJTK0ZjGqlVSSGwj8B17qLwLa9sHO8Ex7vSA/s1600-h/1st+Day+of+Spring,+2010+006.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 396px; height: 290px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfMLYjjdopRNZcUKuZe9-7yIgTceQs7d5CQkvSmOz7WILeNJnrDoO6D9g9pe1iH9zdfiZlGdl121Uxw1i0c21xkJ6CML8iIX_ck-NGYGBWaJTK0ZjGqlVSSGwj8B17qLwLa9sHO8Ex7vSA/s400/1st+Day+of+Spring,+2010+006.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450722878142932994" border="0" /></a> Tree Peony leafing out.<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2A17juc6DDig3o9SuvkfrN6ZLiDfAPq0frZA-Hyr_3YjC7Jj8KMn9MiqU8LZum_0PZgjTUyiDDdbgIHLyjbtrn_kqot4jrYcQUHaNDA4-KdWUHIrKzkoja6-GrOch1gJq-neXmUEC65z-/s1600-h/1st+Day+of+Spring,+2010+007.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2A17juc6DDig3o9SuvkfrN6ZLiDfAPq0frZA-Hyr_3YjC7Jj8KMn9MiqU8LZum_0PZgjTUyiDDdbgIHLyjbtrn_kqot4jrYcQUHaNDA4-KdWUHIrKzkoja6-GrOch1gJq-neXmUEC65z-/s400/1st+Day+of+Spring,+2010+007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5450724141370691842" border="0" /></a><br /> Merrill Magnolia ready to pop!Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-87518752952783830822010-02-07T10:37:00.000-08:002010-02-07T10:52:05.961-08:00Mother Nature's Glory<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3cwQ4ZuW8Xc_fM6e2NE7OyKrLUkS93ksroihQQGB2btWIrHjqms6q7I3GTpn5VLmhshgP91vIO1NJ_zSj3_j5scXvRAAYEF6OLtrQInE4xnR7DnCF5NYmM_svTiyOW8_Lot_eqnYJYCKb/s1600-h/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+009.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 300px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 400px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435573326026346914" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3cwQ4ZuW8Xc_fM6e2NE7OyKrLUkS93ksroihQQGB2btWIrHjqms6q7I3GTpn5VLmhshgP91vIO1NJ_zSj3_j5scXvRAAYEF6OLtrQInE4xnR7DnCF5NYmM_svTiyOW8_Lot_eqnYJYCKb/s400/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+009.jpg" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8MxKfG7Yr9rgUDksReDS0vcivhZigUccvQpxVuU9hcIZzEju2Pvi1uE4LDb8qeYuOEqFIu-6p5jJErK4c7lup99zFqpGtwQWOhse0G-OSdMYsEiPsS0vIaiOBfMsxGWPZ9frUmzwS7_H/s1600-h/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+007.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435573309501626050" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhZ8MxKfG7Yr9rgUDksReDS0vcivhZigUccvQpxVuU9hcIZzEju2Pvi1uE4LDb8qeYuOEqFIu-6p5jJErK4c7lup99zFqpGtwQWOhse0G-OSdMYsEiPsS0vIaiOBfMsxGWPZ9frUmzwS7_H/s400/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+007.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSV2lJimiMeCbLWI1H6HONu-4rsUz2sh8W4JOr7jwi0GoUCFuzOEQZuPKMdjj7kR5ITluHgbhgfO0lbYPZsLftZsdkzM_4V-MElUFeUIP1yddi64lfyFtbMEoyT227AfuiUOFql8dzY5ft/s1600-h/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+002.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5435573301723625938" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSV2lJimiMeCbLWI1H6HONu-4rsUz2sh8W4JOr7jwi0GoUCFuzOEQZuPKMdjj7kR5ITluHgbhgfO0lbYPZsLftZsdkzM_4V-MElUFeUIP1yddi64lfyFtbMEoyT227AfuiUOFql8dzY5ft/s400/Snow,+Feb.,+2010+002.jpg" /></a><br />The garden is beautiful after the snow ! It is especially pretty because we had rain all day Friday, which froze and then received 4-5" of snow. We have some small trees and shrubs that are bent with the weight of the snow/ice, but, hopefully, we won't have too much damage. It is worse to try and knock the ice off plants than let it melt naturally. More damage occurs when humans try to help!</div><div> </div><div>Our grower, S. Zink, is busy planting seeds for us. She grows all the vegetables and herbs that we use in the garden and for our many spring classes. She also starts the annuals used in the demonstration and display beds. David started some broccoli and cauliflower seeds in the office on Friday.</div><div> </div><div>We received sad news this morning. Dolores Fink, horticulture technician, passed away this morning after a short illness. She was the pleasant voice and smiling face our clients were met with when calling or visiting with a question or plant problem. She will be missed for her grace and positive attitude. <br /><br /></div><div></div></div>Horticulture staffhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14771687530623725097noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3645645633637069033.post-89150299258652314222010-01-08T07:42:00.000-08:002010-01-08T10:07:09.639-08:00Winter WonderlandOur first snow of the year!<br />We received between 4 and 5 inches yesterday through this morning. Unfortunately we are also having temperatures in the single digits. The highs have only reached 22 degrees for the past 8 days. But, snow acts as an insulator for plants, so this snowfall was a good thing for them. With the cold temps forcasted for another few days, we won't be too concerned about any plant protection . We always keep a good layer of mulch on all our flower beds and plants because of the cold wind coming off the lake, blowing across the garden constantly.<br /><br /><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424395994033673506" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqSPujfdCwiLvBXn1Us86ZqEynnCbQkNxj8H4pt8klQKw-cvInMv2LXeUEbWyydv65IB93BVtsMg0VdRHJhBTLfxMY0oZ7-PYIivKl4iHHT2U74iwIebnFiD0CDY1KPxaDPYBcD0aKKCc3/s400/Gardens---Winter,2010+008.jpg" /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEOrZKt09zD4cX0_f6DsUEqeRcF5UeEZCCqZ7Vhy9-DtxCD0rRh0b7m2irMMpQrCjk2_QSQWulDD4kGkyb-N0S-gdNnTvE7pg9OZM5J3tXUUzAoIQnN1xxE_GzmNGTHDrmHj57maNC1jz3/s1600-h/Gardens---Winter,2010+012.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424395695125247570" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEOrZKt09zD4cX0_f6DsUEqeRcF5UeEZCCqZ7Vhy9-DtxCD0rRh0b7m2irMMpQrCjk2_QSQWulDD4kGkyb-N0S-gdNnTvE7pg9OZM5J3tXUUzAoIQnN1xxE_GzmNGTHDrmHj57maNC1jz3/s400/Gardens---Winter,2010+012.jpg" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPZhgcGy2wdsA8XEMR21V20b4BFPYJnDqZAPMKUtH5W05W556fP7yjo1Q9Npq53NB_nSMq-o21CaPJQGK1_vIvl2Ge6dOTaD4l0xpxgOflbvpElwYmMNSEH9w61hw2Z5buEai3AdBc7D4/s1600-h/Gardens---Winter,2010+004.jpg"><img style="TEXT-ALIGN: center; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; DISPLAY: block; HEIGHT: 300px; CURSOR: hand" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5424395377121455138" border="0" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBPZhgcGy2wdsA8XEMR21V20b4BFPYJnDqZAPMKUtH5W05W556fP7yjo1Q9Npq53NB_nSMq-o21CaPJQGK1_vIvl2Ge6dOTaD4l0xpxgOflbvpElwYmMNSEH9w61hw2Z5buEai3AdBc7D4/s400/Gardens---Winter,2010+004.jpg" /></a>We are spending time choosing seeds and plants from the many catalogs we receive.
